Acoustic Slat Panels vs MDF Wall Panels: Which Should You Choose?
- by NE Panels
We sell two main types of decorative wall panel: acoustic slat panels with a real-wood finish, and pre-primed MDF panels that you paint yourself. Both make a great feature wall – the right choice depends on the look you want and how you'll use the room.

Choose acoustic slat panels if…
- You want a natural wood look without painting anything.
- The room is echoey – open-plan living spaces, home offices, media rooms or restaurants.
- You'd like a quicker finish: once the panels and trims are up, you're done.

Choose MDF wall panels if…
- You want to match a specific colour or change it later.
- You love the ribbed or fluted look with crisp shadow lines.
- You're happy to caulk, sand and paint as part of the job.
Our MDF panels aren't moisture-resistant, so they aren't suitable for bathrooms or other damp areas. They also need a timber or MDF substrate to fix into – on plasterboard, brick or block you'll need battens or a backing board first. See our MDF installation guide. If you're planning panels for a humid room, ask us before you order.
