Ribbed vs Fluted Wall Panels: Which Profile Is Right for You?
- by NE Panels
Ribbed and fluted panels are two of the most popular ways to add texture to a wall. Both come in our pre-primed MDF range, in 2400 × 600 mm panels you can paint any colour. Here's how they differ, and how to pick the right profile for your room.
What's the difference?
Ribbed panels have raised ribs that create crisp, straight shadow lines – a clean, architectural look.
Fluted panels have rounded grooves and curves that catch the light more softly – a gentler, more organic look.
Our five profiles
| Profile | Look | Works well for |
|---|---|---|
| Mini Ribbed | Fine, closely spaced ribs – subtle texture | Smaller rooms, hallways, a quieter feature |
| Medium Ribbed | Mid-width ribs – clear, defined lines | Bedrooms, living rooms, behind a TV |
| Large Ribbed | Wide, deep ribs – bold texture | Larger walls and statement features |
| Fluted | Rounded, evenly spaced grooves – clean and linear | Modern and classic interiors alike |
| Fluted Flow | Wave-like curves – soft movement | Bedrooms, reading nooks, softer schemes |

Tips for choosing
- Think about scale. Finer profiles suit smaller walls and rooms you see up close; bolder profiles hold their own on big walls and from across the room.
- Think about light. Ribs give sharp shadow lines under side lighting; fluted curves give a softer gradient.
- Think about colour. Dark paint shows less shadow detail, so a bolder profile can help the texture stand out. Light colours show off finer profiles beautifully.
